Karlina Valeiko
National Geographic Traveller (UK)
Judges comment. The tale of a first safari that’s told with the knowledge and confidence of an old hand. The eco messaging is relayed gently, as a matter of fact rather than faith, with subtle references to climate, habitat loss and the complicated interdependence of ecosystems. And it almost made want book a cruise.

TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR

Phoebe Smith
HarperCollins Publishers
Judges comment. a remarkable read (genuinely, not just saying that!). It’s almost more a therapy session than a travelogue – she’s using walking various UK pilgrim trails as a way for her to work through some pretty heavy personal stuff. So the book weaves the twin threads of her walking adventures with her efforts to understand herself and move on from some very challenging personal situations. I think it’s a very brave thing to do. Most people in the travel world will know Phoebe through her journalism, and may have (like I had) a view of her as a very hard-working, talented person who had all her ducks in a row. When you realise what was going on in her personal life, and what she was having to deal with, it makes her achievements more impressive, and is a really powerful reminder that whatever facade they put up, someone amongst your friends and colleagues is probably going through a really rough time – so check in on them!
